Listening as an artistic approach
28.02.2019 / 6pm
Our guest artist Félix Blume presented a selection of 3 projects from his recent work, based on sound but related with sculpture, video and installation. From his technical background as a sound engineer, Félix slowly moved to an artistic approach using sound as basic material and listening as his main practice.
Starting from his series “Son Seul Wildtrack” which is clearly connected to both practices (sound engineer & sound artist), he explains how sound and image have been interleaved in his work. With “Rumours from the Sea” he left the habit of sound-recording to experiment in-situ installation in the public space, strongly connected with the nature and the listening experience. Finally, Félix talks about the process of “Curupira, Creature of the Wood”, his most recent video piece which has recently been presented during Berlinale and which was shown in the Prague art cinema Ponrepo on the 4th of March.
Félix Blume (France, 1984) is a sound artist and sound engineer. He currently works and lives between Mexico and France. His work is focused on listening, it invites us to live sonic experiences that enable a different perception of the surrounding. He uses sound as a basic material in sound pieces, videos, actions and installations. His process is often collaborative, working with communities, using public space as the context within which he explores and presents his works. He is interested in myths and their contemporary interpretation, in human dialogues both with inhabited natural and urban contexts, in what voices can tell beyond words.
His sound pieces have been broadcasted in radios from all over the world and also in different places such as Centre Pompidou and Musée d’Orsay (France). He has awarded with the “soundscape” prize for his last video-piece Curupira, creature of the wood and the “Pierre Schaeffer” prize for his work Los Gritos de Méxicoat the Phonurgia Nova Awards.
In 2018, he did a site-specific sound installation entitled Rumors from the sea, composed of hundred of bamboos and flutes on the coast of Krabi, a work commissioned by the Thailand Biennale. He has participated in international festivals and exhibitions as LOOP Barcelona (2015), CCCB Barcelona (2015), Tsonami Arte Sonoro Chile (2015, 2018), Fonoteca Nacional Mexico (2016), Ex Teresa Mexico (2016), CENTEX Chile (2017), CTM Berlin (2017), Belluard Festival (2018), Arts Santa Monica Barcelona (2018) and Thailand Biennale (2018) among others.
